Eolos

Enlarged view: Focus Project Eolos

The Flettner Rotor Boat was invented by Anton Flettner in the 1920s and uses the Magnus Force as its working principle (force generated by the air-pressure difference surrounding a rotating object). During its almost 100 years of existence, this technology has remained relatively obscure, but it is now regaining favor because of its energy efficiency. A disadvantage of Flettner Rotor propulsion is the height of the rotor, which limits the storage, transport, and navigable zone possibilities for crafts fitted with this technology. To address this roadblock to wider adoption, the Eolos Focus Project team designed a collapsible Flettner Rotor for installation on personal watercraft that is both environmentally friendly and easy to operate.
